Objectives

The General objective of the project is to improve the fisheries and related business operations of the Tanji artisanal fishing community with the purpose of enhancing socio-economic activities and livelihoods. The following are the specific objectives of the project.

Planned activities

The TAFCDF will be administered by The National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions (NACCUG) through the philosophy and principles of credit unions. The CFCMC will be affiliated to NACCUG as The Tanji Credit Union Association whose members will be the members of the respective professional organisations of the fishing community: The Fishermen Association, Fish Processors’ and Fish Mongers’ Associations. NACCUG will train the elected members of the Community Fisheries Centre Management Committee (CFCMC) to improve their capacity for management of the fund at the local level.

Follow-up

The community will be responsible for management of the credit fund and the training and capacity building fund through the existing management structure which will be revamped through training and supervision during project implementation.

Beneficiaries will be obliged to save money to obtain credit and the interest on repayment will keep the fund growing over time. The fund is kept in deposit accounts that make and accumulate interest.
