NGO partners

Since a major goal of the SFLP is to integrate all sectors of society in the fight against poverty in artisanal fisheries communities it is necessary for the SFLP to work with civil society and to help the latter form partnerships both with communities and governments. Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) are usually in the forefront of efforts by civil society to promote development initiatives that will reduce poverty in the poorest and most marginalized communities.

These SFLP partnerships with NGOs can take two forms. In the first case there are those NGOs, supported by the SFLP, that work directly with artisanal fisheries communities in projects. Importantly there are also those that form part of the National Coordinating Units although they may not have any direct project inputs. These NCUs that administer SFLP work in the 25 countries are encouraged to invite all sectors of civil society to be represented in their deliberations and meetings and as such form an important dimension in the work of the SFLP to bring all elements of countries together in the struggle against poverty in artisanal fisheries communities.

The database indicates whether the NGO is directly involved in a community project or is only as yet involved in the workings of the NCU.
