Training co-management

Objective: To train NCU staff, La Mapé co-management committee and staff that will be involved in co-management projects in other parts of Cameroon in co-management.

Duration:             12 months, approved in May 2002

Beneficiaries: UCN, Resource persons in Maroua and Garoua and management committee of La Mapé.

Budget:             US$ 4,610

What aspect of policy dialogue the project sets out to inform: Participation of the fishery communities to the management of the fisheries resources (article 7.6 of CCRF)

Available information on progress: Both trainings have taken place and a report was send to the RSU. The training held in Yaoundé in May was given by a NCU resource person (M. Nguinguiri). The participants (13 persons) came from the fisheries department (5), the field staff from the Northern part of the country (2 preparing two projects on co-management in Maroua and Garoua), NGO’s (3 participants representing 2 NGO’s active in fisheries development) and from the ministry of public investments (1). One representative of the fisheries communities was invited but did not show up. Conclusions given by the participants: the training was excellent as well content wise as practicability of the training (used methodology of different didactical examples was very much appreciated). Documentation was given to those participants who would be directly involved in guiding co-management projects. The training in Magba was held in August. Twenty participants, members of the La Mapé co-management committee took part in the training conducted by an other resource person (M. Bigombe). The workshop has appreciated very much the training which they found indispensable in view of their role in the monitoring of the co-management process. At the end of the training, the work to be done under the CP 19 was planned and budgeted.

Objective:         To contribute towards a better understanding of the role of fish-marketing in livelihoods in each of the countries of the Chad Basin, including Cameroon, Chad, CAR, Niger and Nigeria, and to make available this new knowledge as a basis from which to guide the policy-formation process and the identification of development interventions relevant to promoting a positive relationship between markets and livelihoods in the future.

Duration:             12 months, approved in September 2002

Beneficiaries: NCU and stakeholders of the fish marketing in the Chad Basin

Budget:             US$ 15.000 (50% transferred to Cameroon)
